Laurens Antoine

While you probably know Laurens Antoine as one of the world’s leading celebrity magazine photographers, but that alone wouldn't qualify someone to lecture on getting work, signed or published. In his 25 plus years in fashion and publishing Laurens has also worked as a brand manager, creative director, PR director and more. He has produced countless ads that have included the casting and hiring of talent and Laurens is currently in charge of casting for one of the world's largest magazines. Laurens has helped over 1000 models get signed, published, and begin or better their careers. Be it a tear sheet, or images from a CAT-Shoot, no book or modeling portfolio is complete without a Laurens Antoine image in it! Laurens Antoine has not set their biography yet

 O8E1831 C 250Portraits reflecting skills

Karina Smirnoff is a professional (and five time national champ) dancer as well as a regular on Dancing With The Stars. We wanted her portrait to be as genuine of a portrayal of what she does so we shot her at Third Street Dance Studio in Los Angeles, the same place she tapes segments of DWTS. Great portraits can take time so we rented the studio for half a day to be able to clean up and rearrange things the way it best suited a portrait, not a TV show.

Kaitlin Olson, Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney and Glenn Howerton are the main characters (along with Danny Devito) in the hit show Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Their portrait isn't about them, but the characters they play, moods they evoke, and how they interact. The location (a bar which is also the main scene in their show) is important as part of the story, but even more important is their interaction with each other.

IMG 0005 250Portraits reflecting a profession

Ed O'Conner is a very and successful San Diego attorney and lecturer. His firm is perched on the top floor of an exclusive downtown building and his suite is one of the city’s best views.  Shooting his portrait in his San Diego office with the views and height depicts both Ed and his firm’s success and stature within the legal community.

Ashlan Gorse is a noted red carpet correspondent for E! Entertainment. Her beat: Los Angeles. Depicting Ashlan with the L.A. skyline behind her helps tell that story. Ashlan also has headshots that arte used as avatars on websites and promos for things she does but in this case, an editorial, a portrait made more sense.

Brooke Mangum 1 San Diego Photographer Modeling PortfolioYou may remember Brooke from some of her previous accomplishments we’ve crowed about. Now, one of our favorite models from our CAT-Shoots has landed a slew of new roles including hosting her own morning show on FOX in Salt Lake City, and as one of the stars of USA Network’s new reality series, Summer Camp, premiering July 11th where teams compete for a $250,000 grand prize.

Before we continue gushing, here’s some history and how we came to know Brooke......

alexis farmer tYou may remember the casting we put out called “Paid gig ($15,000) for models with tear sheets”. We couldn’t say what is was for then, but we can now and Alexis Farmer is one of the stars along along with two of our other subscribing members: Aspen Widowson and Jassmine Amos.

Yep, $45,000 was paid out to three of our members, and there’s still $100,000 waiting for the named spokes-model! So what’s the show? And what who will the winner be presenting?

The show is called Model Employee. It’s a reality based docudrama that chooses a winner to become the spokes-model for MGM’s Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Someone will be plastered all over Las Vegas on billboards, in ads and on posters, you’ll have to watch to find out who.

We enjoyed helping cast this show, but what we really liked were the results:

  • 3 of the 8 models on the show were member subscribers: That’s nearly 40%!
  • 19 members got on camera interviews. More than any agency or other source.

Laura Jacobs tLong time Laurens Antoine member Laura Jacobs runs a successful agency in Los Angeles that specializes in placing models overseas. We considered several agencies that specialize in placing models abroad, but Laura really stands out because she not only currently has over 20 models working internationally, but until recently, Laura was also a very successful American model in Asia herself.

This article, written by Laura will help give you some great insight as to if modeling overseas is right for you.

No Excuses!!  Why all Photographers Need to Copyright Their Work

larry zernerLarry Zerner is not only one of the most notable entertainment and intellectual property lawyers in Los Angeles, he's also our copyright lawyer.

We're not going to tell you all the success we've had using Larry prosecuting infringers, or exactly what he does for us; that could open a door for arguments that we've waived some of our sacred privilege with him. But we will give him our highest recommendation and post a must read article for photographers regarding their own rights and why it's important to register your work.

If you want hire Larry, you can go to his website at L. A. Entertainment Lawyer

3O8E2557 tThere are two very different types of mother agencies. Both play an important role in your career, but they are very different, and you need to understand the role of each before signing another contract.

To keep things simple and separate, we’ll call one a mother agency, and the other a mother agent.

  • Mother agencies are agencies that contract you out to other agencies. By default, an agency you have an exclusive all-encompassing contract is a mother agency, although they may not all contract with other agencies for more work.
  • Mother agents are individuals and or non-agencies that act as a mother agent, help develop you and get you signed. In short, more like a manager.

Erin Winters April 2011 thumb"Polaroid" may be a dated camera, but the word is commonly used for test shots by photographers (roids), and within agencies when describing un-retouched, non-professional images of talent used to depict their real selves.

These are the most important shots you can take when trying to get signed as a fashion model. We take them at CAT-Shoots as part of agency submissions but you can take them yourself!

Here's a step by step guide to how to get these important shots without making common mistakes that can keep you from getting signed!
