San Diego photographer, Laurens Antoine on lighting for headshots
We make a big deal about lighting because that's one of the most important technical considerations when shooting headshots. We use 9 - 10 lights for some headshots. Why so many?
We first of all, we don't always use all 10. Sometime we use only 5:
- 2 - 3 background lights (We don't like the conical gradients from one light at all!)
- 1 hair-light.
- 1 main-light, or otherwise known as a key-light.
- 1 fill-light to take out strong shadows.
- 2- 3 "rim" lights to countour your face and head.
Rim lights are one of the most important facets of our lighting. These lights can be hardly noticed at times and may only provide some contouring, but they make a huge difference. Other times rim lights may be very noticeable; they can provide an effect to the shadow side of the face or body. Everyone is different and needs a different lighting setup. The first 5 - 10 minutes of every headshot taken is used to experiment with your particular face.
