San Diego photographer, Laurens Antoine on time for headshots
For our modern look headshots we generally tell people to allow an hour for the headshot full session. For actors, we take even more. Sure, sometimes it goes by faster, and some people prefer to be in and out quickly which we try and honor, but taking your time can make a big difference.
Here's what takes place.
First, we like to talk to you and understand what image you want to portray. This also helps you get more comfortable. We also like to slow your pace down and explain what we are doing and why. We find this makes for much better headshots.
The first few minutes (5-15), we experiment with the lighting to get it the most flattering for your particular face. During this process we show you the differences (we shoot into a computer that you can look at). Your input is very important, you have to be happy.
Once we have the lighting down we start shooting. We try different angles, and sometimes different looks. Again we show you the differences both so you can have input, and also to show you what these small changes in positioning are doing so you can understand why we are making you move in such small increments. This can go on for some time.
Lastly, you pick your picture off right on the spot. This can take some time as well as you comb through all the pics but it's really quite simple. The software has filters that help you make your selection and cuts.
