How do I get pictures for my modeling portfolio?
Our natural instinct is to plug our own CAT-Shoots, and now that we have, we’ll move on.
Many aspiring models start by going on amateur modeling websites (Model Mayhem, One Model Place, etc.) and do trade shoots with amateur photographers. We think this is a big mistake.
Often times, if pretty, aspiring models can even get paid by amateur photographers and some start to believe they are professional models because of it. This has many drawbacks and usually gets potential models way off track.
Some of the drawbacks include:
- The images from amateur photographers are generally inferior. Moreover, they are designed to enhance the photographer, and not the model.
- Many amateur photographers require the model to sign a model release. This can be dangerous. Please read “Model releases and when you should sign one” in the Blog.
- Images from amateur modeling websites are distrusted and disliked by model agencies.
- You can develop bad habits shooting with amateur photographers.
The best way to get pictures is to find an affordable commercial photographer that understands and regularly shoots models for agencies.
