The challenge here was lighting the subjects enough so the depth of field is sharp, without shooting high ISO that results in a grainier look. The lights had to be very close so that falloff wouldn't reach the background which was kept dim to create a more intimate and private feel.
For shadow-less lighting on the subjects we used a ring light placed close to the subjects and scrimmed off the table and food. Strobe heads were placed with booms above the food, and scrimmed from the subjects. You can see the natural looking shadows beneath the plate and tray, but no shadows on the subjects. Once setup, one of the models was given stories to tell the others that provoked the naturally engaged responses you see captured.
