Polaroids for Models
Polaroids for models are the most important images for an aspiring model. Or any model without a big book looking for a new agency. Polaroids for models are often the only images agencies want to see when considering signing you, or inviting you to an open call.
Polaroid for Models FAQ
Why are they called Polaroids for models?
Before digital images were popular, they were actually taken with a Polaroid camera.
Is the camera the only difference?
No. Polaroids for models are particular type of shots. Agencies preferred them submitted as Polaroids because it meant they were not retouched.
What types of shots are these then?
There are specific poses and crops meant to show your true self. Your hair is pulled back to show your facial structure and you are not to wear makeup. Polaroids for models are supposed to be accurate representations of what you look like.

The definitive standard in Polaroids for models
When you book a CAT-Shoot for Polaroids you’ll get the same tried and proven Polaroid contact sheet we include at other CAT-Shoots and more.
We describe these, including instruction on how to take them yourself in our blog, but to review, here are the six basic poses:
- Headshot from the front.
- Smiling headshot from the front.
- Profile headshot with hair pulled back.
- Full body front.
- Full body profile.
- And full body from behind.
No makeup, no hint of anything other than natural lighting, and no attempt to be cute. Not very flattering but it’s what agencies want and expect.
With these in hand, you are ready to start submitting to agencies. But, read below….
“Loft Style” Polaroids for models
Agencies want to see the raw girl like a blank canvas. The new faces bookers at most agencies are good at being able to tell who is qualified from Polaroids, but they also look at a lot of models every day.
Standing out is always your goal. By submitting all your Polaroids on one sheet, it leaves room for more images to be sent.
Breaking completely away from what agencies want to see is not a good idea. So we devised “Loft Style” Polaroids to include as well. They are named after the typical New York loft studio images that are taken by photographers that do text shoots for agencies. This keeps these images within the genre of what bookers are used to seeing, and used to seeing from models they have already decided they are interested in.
Some of the basic premises of regular Polaroids are maintained. The lighting looks like window light. While some makeup maybe applied, it is kept very natural so it is not noticeable. And you let your hair down, but for the most party un-styled.
Not only are these more flattering but they also let you show some fluidity and expression.
